The A57 east of Manchester looking towards the Longdendale Valley. At the bottom of the hill the A57 branches right to Glossop and the Snake Pass and the A628 continues along the Longdendale Valley to Barnsley. Since ancient times this area has been part of the north eastern 'horn' of Cheshire. There has been a campaign to build a by-pass, which on 1 April 2003 was given formal approval.

The 'spooky' Longdendale valley was carved out of the Pennines by a glacier during the Ice Age. The gentle curve of the hillside on the right is evidence of glacial activity. The valley has a reputation for strange nighttime phenomena including lights and UFO's, though I've never seen anything myself.
