The Bridge of Unity is part of the main B1 road linking Berlin and Potsdam. In the GDR era it marked the border between West Berlin and East Germany, and was closed off except for occasional military traffic. It became famous as a place of Cold War intrigue when spies were handed over from East to West on the bridge. On a dull and overcast day like today, the Brücke der Einheit regains a little of the sinister aura it once had.
