The sign on the M56 bridge over the River Bollin near Manchester Airport says 'Cheshire'. It's important to be aware that this is the boundary of the administrative county of Cheshire, created in 1974, not the ancient county whose border runs along the River Mersey ('boundary river') some 3 miles (5km) to the north of here. This sign is misleading: Signs should mark both the original, ancient county borders as well as the post 1974 county county area. See my Campaign for Cheshire.
