The statue of Daniel O'Connell on O'Connell Street Dublin before and after cleaning. On the left, the statue on 30 November 2004 covered in bird droppings with heavy staining and corrosion of the surface metal. On the right the statue on 24 May 2005 after cleaning, as workers were taking down the protective wooden fencing. The transformation is remarkable. Previously, the pollutants flowing down made the face look almost Oriental. In the cleaned statue the face looks decidedly Irish and full of character.
