Liverpool's St Georges Hall is undergoing major renovation work. The neo-Classical hall was designed by Harvey Lonsdale Elmes who was only 25 years old when the foundation stone was laid in 1838. Construction began in 1841 under his supervision until 1847 when due to ill health withdraw from the project. He died of consumption later that year in Jamaica.

"It is a very common mistake but you have assumed that Harvey Lonsdale Elmes had designed St George's Hall before the foundation stone was laid on Queen Victoria's Coronation Day in June 1838. The competition for the design of the Hall did not appear in The Times until March 1839 and Elmes was announced as the winner in July 1839. However, he then won the competition to design the new Assize Courts in October 1840 and it was only after then, when a decision was taken to combine the two, that he began work on the combined design for the finished building. He was by then 27 years old."
