The National Portrait Gallery, founded in 1856, is dedicated to portraits of famous British people. The gallery has the largest collection of its kind in the world, embracing photography, painting, sculpture and other forms e.g. silhouettes.
The National Portrait Gallery is one of my favourite galleries. It's not just about art, but about the personalities themselves, and their contribution to the history and development of the UK. The portrait is the most basic and most challenging of visual forms, and is as varied and fascinating as people.
