Three bridges of various designs and from various eras are reflected in the shimmering water of Castlefield canal basin, on the south west border of the city centre. The white footbridge was built in the 1990's and echoes the two railway bridges both dating from the 19th century. The red brick bridge carries the Manchester, Urmston, Liverpool railway line. The cast iron latticework bridge which used to carry trains to Central Station is now used by Metrolink trams. The transformation of Castlefield from a no-go area of derelict wharves into an attractive and well- used place of apartments adn bars is one of Manchester's recent success stories.
