The John Rylands Library is one of Manchester's most magnificent buildings. With its Gothic architecture it resembles a cathedral, but in other respects is is a symbol of modernity: It was one of the first buildings in Manchester to have electric lighting. As part of the redevelopment of the Spinningfields district, it was renovated and a new extension and new main entrance were added at the rear. The John Rylands Library, part of Manchester University, is a 'cathedral to learning' in the heart of Manchester.
