The Chinese character for island brings together the characters for 'bird' and 'mountain', as if a bird were sitting on a rock in the sea. The 'island' character on the left is taken from a sign in Tokyo. The seagull and rock are at the town of Skerries, north of Dublin. 'Shima' is the Japanese word for island, as in Hiroshima, also pronounced 'jima', as in Miyajima, or Iwojima
I haver a special interest in Chinese characters (called Kanji in Japan) as they are a combination of pictures and writing, my two main interests.
