Collins Barracks was built in 1701 and was designed by Thomas Burgh. It is the oldest inhabited barracks in Europe and one of the oldest buildings in Dublin. On either side of the main building are modern style linking buildings. Part of the complex is now used by the National Gallery of Ireland. As child seeing this building from the bus on the way to Heuston station, I found it a profoundly depressing sight. Despite the modern style additions, which I can't help finding an intrusive modern element, the building retains a strong aura of the past and is a reminder the less pleasant sides of Ireland's history.
