This is Oldham Street looking towards the junction with Dale Street. It's Saturday 3rd of October 2002, the penultimate day of the Commonwealth Games. A yellow Manchester 2002 banner hangs above the street. Once Manchester's premier shopping street, it became sidelined after the opening of the Arndale Centre in the 1970's. In recent years it has re- emerged as a place of alternative shops, cafes and night clubs at the heart of the Northern Quarter. Oldham Street and the Northern Quarter have certain similarities with the Temple Bar area of Dublin, though Temple Bar is far more lively and economically successful.
