On 29 October 2005 in Dresden, The Duke of Kent was given the Federal Republic's highest order that can be awarded to a non-head of state. The honour was presented by Saxony President Georg Milbradt, representing the German President Horst Köhler. The event took place on the eve of the inaugration and blessing of Dresden's Frauenkirche,
