From the 1930s, the art deco Tatton Cinema was the centrepiece of the village of Gatley, to the south of Manchester. The Tatton closed following the opening of the multiplex cinema in nearby Parrs Wood around 2000, and the building behind the facade was partially destroyed. (Since 1974 Gatley has been part of the Stockport MBC local authority district.)
It has a very negative effect on a locality when a familiar and well-loved amenity suddenly closes and is allowed to fall into disrepair.
