The sign on the M61 near Blackrod north west of Manchester says 'Lancashire The Red Rose County'. It's important to be aware that this is the boundary of the administrative county of Lancashire, created in 1974, not of the ancient county whose border runs along the River Mersey ('boundary river') some 15 miles (22km) to the south of here. This sign is misleading. Boundary signs for the current administrative county should be marked 'Lancashire County Council' or 'Lancashire administrative counthy'. On a trip up the M61 in November 2005 I noticed that this sign had been removed. Lancashire Day is 27 November.
