Looking down the Manchester Ship Canal towards the M60 (formerly M63/M62) Barton Bridge at dusk. We are standing on the Barton Road Bridge, aka Barton Swing Bridge. The 'island' on the left divides the smaller and larger locks. The canal is still in use but only by a small number of ships. For Manchester this point is equivalent to the mouth of the Mersey in Liverpool, the place where ships leave the city behind. Straight ahead under the bridge are Warrington, Runcorn, Liverpool, Dublin, Ontario, New York, Bermuda, Galveston and other ports. Sadly, few ocean-going ships churn up the waters of the canal nowadays.
