The Palace of Culture, opened in the mid-60s, is similar in style to Berlin's Palace of the Republic, opened 1976. Both are typical examples Soviet-style architecture and provide an important record of life in the GDR (1948-1990). In early 2006 Berlin's Palace of the Republic is under threat of demolition.
