Rutland is the smallest and among the oldest of the English counties. It was abolished and merged with Leicestershire as part of local government reform in 1974, but was restored to independence around 25 years later. In August 2003 the Harringworth Viaduct / Welland Valley Viaduct celebrated its 125th anniversary.

The viaduct is a remarkable sight, built in pale stone and stretching across a very wide valley on the border between Northamptonshire and Rutland.
