This is Liverpool Lime Street Station and the train to London is awaiting departure on platform 8. The ageing loco and carriages will soon be replaced by Virgin's Pendolino trains, one of which came to Lime Street earlier this week for a launch event with Virgin founder Richard Branson. It won't be long before the sight of this train becomes part of history.

I remember when these carriages were first introduced on Inter City routes in the 1970's, when British Rail proclaimed 'This is the age of the train'. The new Virgin Pendolino trains are fantastic but we seem to have been waiting for them for years.
