The number 9 bus waits at the traffic lights on the north side of Battersea Bridge. It's dusk and the interior lights and headlamps are on. In the distance along the Thames can be seen Wandsworth Bridge.

By 2005 the Routemaster will be history. If the authorities are determined to remove the Routemaster from regular service, then at least a basic fleet maintained and used on one or two routes, so that this important element of London's identity is retained.
