Cadishead high level railway bridge over the Manchester Ship Canal has been disused for many years. It used to carry trains between Warrington and Stockport via Broadheath near Altrincham. The bridge was one of a number built specially for the Manchester Ship Canal which opened in 1894. The viewpoint is from the newly built Cadishead Way, opened 2005.

This beautiful piece of Victorian engineering ought still to be carrying freight and passenger trains today. The dismantling of one third of Britain's railway network in the 1960s was not inevitable. It was the result of the chronic underfunding and mismanagement of the railways in the immediate post war years. To experience a system as busy and extensive as Britain's railways were in the 1930's, and could still have been today, you need to see the railways in Japan.
