The entrance to the footbridge over Whitworth Street West linking Deansgate Station with GMEX bears the inscription 'Exhibition Footbridge GMC 1985'. The bridge is an early example of regeneration in Manchester and was built following the conversion of the former Manchester Central Station into the GMEX exhibition centre (recently re-branded as 'Manchester Central') The bridge, once a symbol of the regeneration of Manchester by the GMC or Greater Manchester Council (abolished 1986), is now looking run down and in need of renovation or replacement. Maybe on account of its 80s style retro look it remains a popular place for bands to have their photograph taken.
