This is a proposed design for a new Cheshire 'ancient county' sign to mark the original boundary between Lancashire and Cheshire on the River Mersey. We are looking south along the A5095 towards Cheadle. Click to see a 1024x768 version of this image.
My Cheshire ancient county sign is brown, signifying that this boundary is significant only for local culture, education, history and tourism. it has no administrative significance. Signs marking the ancient county boundaries, which have existed for hundreds of years, were removed in 1974, making them invisible. This new sign makes visible again this important historical geographical line. To educate people further, I have included a map of Cheshire in its original or 'true' boundaries, with a red spot to mark this location. On the left is the symbol of three wheatsheaves and a sword, which I copied from the Cheshire County Council sign (see thumbnail).
