Picture: Proposed Cheshire Ancient County sign Mersey Tunnel Wallasey » Filename: CheSignWirWalTnl7531.jpg

Visualisation of a sign marking the ancient boundary of Cheshire. I have placed the sign at the exit of the Kingsway Tunnel from Liverpool to Wallasey, underneath the Wirral Metropolitan Borough sign. This is one of a series of proposed signs to be displayed along the northern boundary of Cheshire, ancient county, part of my Campaign for Cheshire.

This would be seen as a controversial sign as it goes against commonly held assumptions about local geography. Many people are unaware that the Wirral is part of Cheshire, but a quick look on any map from the Middle Ages to 1974 will confirm this fact. It is of course outside the post 1974 Cheshire County Council area, which begins further down the Wirral.

Recognising that the Wirral is part of Cheshire does not mean turning your back on Liverpool. The Wirral is part of Cheshire and also part of Merseyside and the Liverpool city region. People need to recognise the principle of overlapping spheres of influence. My Campaign for Cheshire aims simply to educate and inform people about all local boundaries, whether ancient or more recent.
