Ashton Canal in drizzly weather 1998 (bw)

View east along the Ashton Canal near Ancoats to the east of Manchester city centre. Old mill buildings are standing derelict. To the right can be seen part of the gasholder at Holt Town. The bridge carries Cambrian Street over the canal.

See location in Multimap.

Since I took this photo in 1998, things have changed. Many of the old mills have been lost. The gasholder was taken down around 2001. New development is in progress in the New Islington area close to here. The canal will never look quite as atmospheric as it did when I took this photo 9 years previously.
