Manchester Central Station 1982

View of Manchester Central Station in 1982, prior to its conversion into an exhibition hall. It was closed to all railway traffic in 1969, and served as a car park until conversion into the GMEX exhibition and concert hall in the 1980s. GMEX was rebranded in 2007 as 'Manchester Central'.

The GMEX aka Manchester Central exhibition and concert venue is one of the first regeneration stories of Manchester, and is one of the most prestigious and successful attractions in Manchester. However, the station should never have been closed and it ought still to be serving in its original role as Manchester's most centrally located and structurally impressive railway terminus. Maybe some day it will return to the purpose for which it was first built.
