"Ralph Erskine, who died in 2005, designed the Ark. Erskine was born in England but spent most of his life in Sweden, where he did most of his work. The Ark is one of very few projects built by Erskine in this country, with the other most notable work being the Byker Wall housing estate in Newcastle upon Tyne.

It is perhaps due to Erskine being out of the British architectural elite that he had the opportunity to take risks, and The Ark caused much controversy when built for its rule-breaking design. Some of its detractors spread a rumour that The Ark was built back to front but because of its design no one really noticed until it was finished!"
