We are looking from the roundabout where the A50 crosses the M6 motorway in north Cheshire, to the south east of Warrington. In the distance can be seen the twinkling red lights of the Winter Hill transmitter, situated in the West Pennine Moors north west of Bolton.

The motorway sweeps along in a gentle curve towards the right, leading to the Thelwall Viaduct where the motorway crosses from Cheshire into Lancashire. This section of the M6 passes through the east of the Borough of Warrington.

Since higher intensity red warning lights were put on the Winter Hill transmitter, it can be seen at night up to 50 miles away. Driving up the M6, you first catch sight of it just after the border with Cheshire. Here, the distance is almost exactly 18 miles (29 km).

The Winter Hill transmitter with its bright red string of lights looks like an artwork or beacon symbolising north west England. Of course, there are identical transmitters all over the UK, but the Winter HIll transmitter is in a uniquely prominent location and is highly visible from many parts of the North West.
