These cabins were part of the Marienborn checkpoint on the autobahn between Hannover and Berlin. Thousands of cars either entering the GDR or in transit to West Berlin were processed here.
For drivers entering the GDR, for example to visit relatives, formalities were stringent, for those in transit to West Berlin less so. Still, passing through here could be a frightening and intimidating experience, and sometimes there were very long waiting times. All this came to an end in 1990 when Germany was reunified and the GDR was abolished.
