The mosaic in the the form of an Hindu-style mandala is a memorial to John Lennon in the area in Central Park renamed Strawberry Fields. He and Yoko Ono lived just a few steps away in the Dakota Building. People regularly leave apples at the centre of the mosaic.

While we were looking at the mosaic, some French backpackers sang a tuneless but heartfelt version of 'Imagine'.
