In the heart of Manila, near the street Recto, there is an area of improvised housing made of wood and corrugated iron.

This type of housing is a feature of many south east Asian cities. In Hong Kong, the Kowloon Walled City was the most notorious example of this type of development. It was razed to the ground in 1990/1991.
