Ford Consul Mk II, year 1961, registration 302 DLN formerly owned by Peter Cannon, Manchester-based hair and make-up artist. This photograph was taken in late 1985 outside Peter's flat in Mulberry Court, Pendleton, Salford, c 1 mile west of Manchester city centre.

This Mk II Consul was originally dark green but Peter had it resprayed in pale cream for his wedding in 1985. Peter once lent me the Consul to drive down to the unemployment office on Trafford Rd Salford to sign on. It was quite an experience to drive, with its bench style front and rear seats, lack of safety belts and gear stick mounted on the steering column. I think I remember getting a few funny looks from my fellow claimants.

As a child I remember trips to Ireland when my uncle Jack Guiney drove us from Dublin to Dunboyne in a Ford Consul similar to this one. With its 'ultra-modern' American style bodywork and spacious interior, this car was trendsetting in its day.

This is a copy of a page from my scrapbook of photos from 1985 and 86. It's interesting to view this as an early example of image manipulation. Using a pair of scissors, I cut the car out of its setting and placed it on a black background. I also used the technique of joining two photos to make one combined image. Exactly ten years later I would be experimenting with these same techniques on the Apple Mac Power PC computer, using a program called Adobe Photoshop, version 2.5.
