These old-fashioned lamp posts were once seen on roads all over Liverpool. They date from the 1920s or 30s and have a distinctive design. The lamp itself is recent. These lamps were still in place in the early 2000s. Down the slope is the bridge that passes under the main railway line south from Liverpool Lime Street to Crewe and London. On the bridge is inscribed what looks like the year 1928. Sadly on a visit to Liverpool in 2007 I noticed the vintage lamp posts had all been removed and replaced with modern ones. I was impressed with the good sense of Liverpool to preserve this important element of the city's road system. They were still perfectly usable and were virtually unique in the UK. I wonder what has happened to them.
