Up til the early 2000s, a series of 1930s style lamp posts had for some reason survived on this stretch of Queens Drive in south Liverpool. The lamp posts were a rare example of a type once seen all over Liverpool, notably in the tram photographs of Henry Priestley. On a visit to Liverpool in 2007 I was disappointed to find the old lamp posts had disappeared and been replaced by modern ones. The lamp posts had a genuine quality of the old Liverpool. You could almost imagine an old tram, Austin 7 or pre-war bus appearing along the road. With their ornamentation and supports above and below the arm, and electrical box on the side at the top of the pole, they were a genuine period piece. Queens Drive is a less interesting place without them.
