The Al-Maktoum Bridge spans the Creek, linking Dubai to the south and Deira to the north. We are looking from the Dubai City Centre shopping mall, opened in 1996. Rising up beyond the Creek, near Trade Centre Road, are big new buildings typical of many springing up around the city. The Al-Maktoum Bridge was the first bridge across the Creek, and opened in May 1963.

Prior to the opening of the Al-Maktoum Bridge, it was necessary to drive all the way round the Creek, a journey - I would estimate - of around 10 miles (16km) or 45 minutes, driving across the sand. Today, with Dubai's traffic problems, it can take just as long to get from one side of the Al-Maktoum Bridge to the other.
