in the late 1970s, this former cinema on Hyde Rd Belle Vue was the Mayflower Club, one of Manchester's best known punk and reggae venues. The Buzzcocks, Joy Division and other local artists played there regularly. This photo was taken in 1985 by Brian Keelagher, who played at the Mayflower with his punk band.

I never went to the Mayflower Club, and have no recollection of the building, which I find very beautiful. It's one of countless interesting pieces of architecture in Manchester that have been lost over the years. If they were still there, and in use, Manchester would be a much richer place. Brian tells me the club was later renamed Funhouse - a name with overtones of Iggy Pop. He believes that in the early 70s it was the Stoneground, a heavy metal rock club. He also remembers seeing a sign 'Southern Sporting Club' or similar. Can anyone shed any light?
