The interior of the former Central Station looks empty and abandoned in this view captured in 1982. It was closed in 1969 and subsequently used as a car park. It's a Sunday today, and there is only one car visible. The NCP car park sign can be seen on the right. Ahead are the blocks of council flats in Hulme. Just a few years later, the station was completely renovated and reopened as the GMEX exhibition centre. It was an excellent example of the succesful re-use of a building that could easily have been demolished. Personally I would have preferred if the station had remained open. If this were Japan, Central Station would still be used for its original purpose today. I feel drawn into this photo, which I took on my first camera, the Fujica STX-1, and wish I could go back and re-photograph the station and indeed the rest of Manchester.
