A major visual resource for people
interested in remembering / rediscovering Manchester as it was in past times is now
available online. Virtually the entire archive of over 77,000 local images held by the
City of Manchester's Central Library has been digitised and made available for
viewing via the internet.
This image collection is just astounding, though the interface may draw gritted teeth and inhalations of breath due to its limitations - You can't just click through larger size images in 'slide show' fashion, you can't add feedback, and at present you can't order prints online. Nevertheless this is a major achievement and should be required viewing for anyone who wants to look beyond the facade of present-day Manchester. Oh, and the staff are very helpful too! About the photos This image is from the portfolio of Aidan O'Rourke photographer writer website publisher. Most images are copyright Aidan O'Rourke and may be available as prints or high resolution files. Some images are by other artists, and are published with their approval, or are included in reviews of their work. The portfolio contains a wide range of themes and image formats. The images are used to illustrate articles on this site, and to provide information about the subjects depicted. Not all images on this site are available as prints or high resolution files. Every photo request needs to be pre-approved by me first. If there are any restrictions or if the picture is not my copyright, then I will refer you to the relevant photographer, artist or organisation who should be able to help you, or simply follow the link to their website.
