The Capitol Theatre, former ABC cinema, stood on the corner of School Lane and Parrs Wood Road in the south Manchester suburb of East Didsbury. For many years it was a cinema, and in the 1960s was used as a venue for TV programmes, most notably the talent show Opportunity Knocks, presented by Hughie Green. It was acquired by Manchester Polytechnic (later MMU) and was used by undergraduates on the drama course. Many famous actors trained here, including David Threlfall and Sue Cleaver, both of whom I watched in a student production during 1987. From 1998 to 1999 the theatre was demolished and replaced by flats, which were named Capitol Court. Many were sad to see the demise of this unique building, a potent reminder of Manchester's distinguished past in the areas of cinema, television and drama. A theatre on the main MMU campus on Oxford Rd took over as the Capitol Theatre.
