Abu Dhabi is the capital city of the
United Arab Emirates -it's also the biggest of the seven UAE emirates, with a vast
land area bordering
on Saudi Arabia and Oman. See the map for location details
The city is built on an island which stretches out from the UAE mainland. In 1950, Abu
Dhabi was an empty
area of sand with no roads and only a small settlement by the
beach. The Ruler's fort and the nearby compound of the British agent were the only
other buildings here.
In 2000 Abu Dhabi is a large city of
office and residential blocks, hotels, shopping centres, palaces and gardens - indeed
it's been called 'Garden City
of the Gulf'. The city is criss-crossed
by a system of 6 lane highways with traffic light intersections, following the American
grid pattern. The six kilometre long
Corniche, with its gardens, trees and
fountains, is Abu Dhabi's most impressive feature. Virtually the only buildings to
have survived the oil boom are the Ruler's fort
and the British agent's
compound, now the British Embassy. I lived in Abu Dhabi for four years, and saw many
changes and developments during the time I was
there.
Stadtansicht vom alten Fort
Abu Dhabi
