Nine photographs of the cast iron 'men' on the sands at Formby, north of Liverpool. The installation 'Another Place' by Antony Gormley features 100 figures made of cast iron. They are spread out over 2 miles of beach, and extend half a mile into the sea.

It was previously installed at Cuxhaven Germany, and was then brought here to Crosby, near Liverpool. By Jan 2007 it should have been removed, but the men will continue to be lapped by the freezing cold Irish sea for some while yet.

On the day I visited, there was a powerful wind and leaden sky and nobody else was on the beach.. The effect was one of loneliness and isolation. Perhaps if the 'men' were closer together there would be a sense of community, and then you realise it's the same man, reproduced 100 times, so it's a case of loneliness and isolation multiplied by a hundred.

I was glad to get back to the car park. The thought of those figures out there all night is chilling, but that's what happened to the Morecambe Bay cocklers in real life. Eerie and thought-provoking.
