Stockport River Mersey M60 and council flats

The River Mersey begins at the confluence of the Tame and the Goyt in Stockport town centre, some 6 miles (10km) south of Manchester city centre. A B&Q lorry passes on the M60 overhead. Above the scene are the refurbished council flats on Lancashire Hill.

This photo was used in the M60 book.

The River Mersey, Merseyside and Merseybeat have come to be synonymous with Liverpool and conurbation. But the Mersey begins in Stockport, 6 miles (10km) south east of Manchester, some 35 miles (50km) east of Liverpool. I have a map of Liverpool and Manchester from the 1950s entitled 'Merseyside'.
