The Historic Warships together with the salvaged German U-Boat U534 are a major tourist attraction in Birkenhead. On 6 February 2006, the Historic Warships Trust went into voluntary receivership, and the attraction faces an uncertain future.
I went on the tour of the German U-Boat U534 on Saturday 4 February. It was a chilling and fascinating experience. The Historic Warships are a precious reminder of the decisive role played by Birkenhead and Liverpool Docks during World War 2. It reflects very badly on Wirral Borough Council despite tourism development plans, the Historic Warships have been obliged to shut down in this way.
