The former Hacienda building as it looked two years after its closure in June 1997. It had another three years until it was demolished. The Hacienda was founded by members of New Order together with their manager Rob Gretton, broadcaster and impresario Tony Wilson and designer Peter Saville.

The Hacienda building was not traditionally regarded as an attractive piece of architecture, but since it was demolished in 2001, there has been a growing appreciation of its symbolic value and uniqueness. In the opinion of many people it should never have been demolished, and now you can only see it in photographs, such as this one, taken from across the traffic lights on Whitworth Street West.
