The CIS Building with its recently-added solar panels rises up behind the remains of the 19th century Smithfield Market, in Manchester's Northern Quarter.

Manchester is often a potent mixture of old and new, as exemplified here. Since 1972 the the main wholesale market for Manchester has been New Smithfield Market in Openshaw, around 2 miles east of the city centre. New apartments have been built within the historic facade on the site of the old market.
