Stark, moody monochrome image looking onto Latchford High Level Bridge over the Manchester Ship Canal, in the south of Warrington. The structure of the bridge with its overhead bars, is silhouetted against striking clouds.

Artists often use pictures to express their state of mind. I'm very impressed and influenced by the stark pencil drawings of LS Lowry, with their uncompromising simplicity and directness. I find the late 19th century bridges all the way down the Manchester Ship Canal to be fascinating from the point of view of their structure and historical significance. I've always been fascinated with bridges from their structure and symbolism. Here the bridge seems to be an anachronism. In reality, the bridge is still very much in use, but can only be used by traffic up to a certain weight. The image is actually still in colour but due to the strong contrast, appears black and white.
