Picture: Manchester Ship Canal looking east from A49 bridge » Filename: WarShipCnlEZm9403.jpg

View up the Manchester Ship Canal from the A49 bridge (Wilderspool Causeway - London Rd), Stockton Heath in the south of Warrington. The next bridge is Latchford high level road bridge, then Knutsford Rd swing bridge and beyond that Latchford Locks, with the sadly disused and iconic Latchford high level railway bridge above it Just visible, around 2 and a half miles away, is the Thelwall Viaduct, which carries the M6 over the Manchester Ship Canal.

See wider view

This section of the Manchester Ship Canal offers some remarkable views, partly because the canal continues in a straight line for several miles. When the bridges are photographed with a zoom lens, the distance is compressed, to spectacular effect. The misty atmosphere gives an effect similar to the paintings of Adolphe Valette.
