Picture: Stockport Plaza neon sign » Filename: StoPlazaNeonA104.jpg

Stockport Plaza cinema is located in the town centre on the south side of Mersey Square. It was renovated and brought back into use by the Friends of Stockport Plaza who began their work around 2000. In 2009 the exterior was further renovated and a new neon sign appeared on the front of the building. This is part of the sign at the top of the facade. The Plaza's neon decoration is now an unmissable landmark in Stockport town centre after dark.

With its red and green colours and 'Heinz Beans'-style design, the neon sign has a strong aura of the 1930s, when the cinema was first built. The neon is a very attractive feature and should serve well to promote the Plaza and encourage more people to visit it. The Friends of the Plaza have in my opinion done a magnificent job in preserving and renovating this magnificent cinema, which I remember from my childhood.

Technical details: Sony Alpha A350 digital camera and 75-300mm zoom lens set to 150mm. This photo was taken at dusk. The exposure was 1/40th of a second at f5.6, ISO 400. To obtain a shake-free image using the zoom lens at this focal length it was necessary to secure the camera. I did this by resting it on the wall along the east side of Wellington Rd North and holding it steady. To frame the picture I used the convenient flip-out LCD, much better than squinting through the viewfinder! Finally, in Adobe Photoshop Elements, I removed some railings to the left of the sign. I also used 'correct distortion' to correct horizontals and verticals.
