The Mancunian Way was built in the 1960's and displays the construction styles of the time, including tapered 'legs' like a giant coffee table. In Dubai, flyovers and underpasses are covered in ceramic tiles with murals depicting traditional scenes. A similar makeover for the Mancunian Way might please the general public but would go against the principles of minimalist, functional design. Fly posters brought a splash of colour into a dismal grey scene until they were banned by the local authority in 2004. |
