Looking north along Great
Ancoats Street in 2000, the view of the mills is partially blocked by
Ancoats Retail Park. Symbols of Manchester's industrial greatness, the
buildings are standing empty awaiting a new use.
In 2005 the mills are shrouded in scaffolding. Three cranes rise
high above the rooftops, part of the massive repair and renovation work
in progress. The neighbouring Murrays Mills are completely enveloped in
protective covering. Now as before buses on their way to and from
east Manchester use Great Ancoats Street. Ancoats Retail Park has been
renamed Central Retail Park.
EWM says: The site of the retail park would make a great new park,
overlooked by the mill facades.
