I have been offering private lessons in German for many years, moving to online lessons in German in the last couple of years. I love to teach German online and I now have students in several countries.
My level is near-native speaker standard, and so I offer online German classes for beginners as well as intermediate and advanced students. So that you know what to expect, here are 20 important points about my German language private tuition

- I will always set the level, choice of content and type of activities to suit you, your interests and the stage you are at.
- I aim to create a relaxed atmosphere, but I’ll give you plenty of practice and input during the lesson.
- The time tends to go quickly because I like to maintain a good pace and keep things varied.
- If when speaking you make an error I’ll often interrupt to correct you. Error correction is the key to learning.
- At beginner level I use a variety of course books. At intermediate level, we work with amazing articles, audio & video carefully chosen by me from the German-speaking media.
- I often tell you about techniques you can use to maximise your learning power when working with all kinds of materials in the session or in your own time.
- We study grammar in small, bite-sized chunks, always using examples taken from the content. Tip: Learn key phrases by heart.
- I try to include lots of conversation and role-play. We do a lot of repetition, but it’s enjoyable. Tip: Once is good, twice is better but three times is best.
- We do lots of repetition of words and phrases from the content, good for pronunciation and memorisation.
- We read all kinds of texts and dialogues. We listen to them too on recordings which you can play in your own time.
- Every session is different. We discover new words, phrases, facts and techniques. I refer to dictionaries & Wikipedia.
- I make notes on the screen as we go along. My text editor is my whiteboard. I will send the notes to you at the end of each session
- In intermediate sessions, I use mostly German. At beginner level I use quite a bit of German but do explanations in English.
- The notes build up to form a record of the lessons and a powerful revision aid. I’ve taught some students for years and have a record of every lesson.
- I interrupt a lot to correct pronunciation! Sorry about that but I am quite strict! It’s better to learn the correct pronunciation at an early stage, rather than have to correct it later.
- I give you tips you can use when you’re working on your own, such as how to memorise, when to revise and simple activities.
- You need to use the language as part of your day to day routine, like checking email or social media. I will give you tips and advice.
- Please note: Private lessons are not enough! Self-study every day is essential to steadily build up your knowledge in the language and make real progress.
- I enjoy writing, so I encourage students to write their own content, which we can improve and perfect together.
- At the end of each session, I’ll give you written tasks based on what we’ve covered to complete and send to me via e-mail for correction.
